The European Patients Forum was founded during 2003 in response to calls by the European Commission and other EU institutions to have one pan-European patient body to address and be consulted on issues concerning the interests of patients in the European healthcare debate. Start up funding as with many patient groups -especially at the European level - has been scarce although they have been able to represent patients within the EC and EU institutions. The EPF have already organised a number of "Strengthening patient group workshops" with sponsor support. These have included groups from the new member states. EPF is registered in Belgium as a membership organisation. EFCCA has been a member of the EPF since 2004.   Link   ACN
Active Citizenship Network officially began in December of 2001 as the European and international branch of the Italian citizen movement, Cittadinanzattiva (Active Citizenship). Its mission is to promote and support the construction of a European citizenship as an “active citizenship” meaning the exercise of powers and responsibilities of citizens in policy making. This recognizes the prior role of national and local citizens’ organizations and their strengthening as participants in policy making. It also requires an enrichment of the concept of subsidiarity in the European Union to include the relationship between institutions and citizens, in order that institutions favor the free initiative of citizens, both as individuals and as organizations, in carrying out activities directed to the common interest.
