On 27 June it was announced that the Standing Committee of European Doctors
(CPME), a membership driven association representing approximately 2
million EU/EEA physicians and the European Medical Technology Industry
Association (Eucomed) have agreed a "Joint Declaration on the Cooperation
between the Medical Profession and the Medical Technology Industry".
CPME
and Eucomed, aware of their responsibilities vis-à-vis patients and society,
consider it essential to establish jointly accepted guidelines so that they can
serve as a framework at both European and national level in the relationship
between doctors and medical technology companies. The medical profession and the
medical technology industry have already each adopted ethical principles to
govern the conduct of their activities. CPME and Eucomed have confirmed these
existing principles in this joint statement.
The Declaration also
addresses meetings organised and sponsored by industry, sales and promotion,
clinical trials, and consultancy.
CPME aims to promote the highest
standards of medical training and medical practice in order to achieve the
highest quality of health care for all citizens of Europe. CPME is also
concerned with the promotion of public health, the relationship between patients
and doctors, and the free movement of doctors within the EU.
